Tying Instructions: Bivisible Dun
1. Attach the hook to the vise and secure the thread just past the midpoint of the hook shank. Lay a thread foundation to the bend of the hook. |
2. Attach 10-12 strands of z-lon at the start of the bend of the hook. The shuck should be about a hook shank in length. Secure the z-lon tag to the top of the hook shank just beyond the mid point of the shank. Clip off the tag end of the z-lon strands. |
3. Clip a small bundle of black calf hair from the tail. Holding the tips of the bundle with one hand, pull out the smaller hairs from the base of the bundle. Try to keep the tips even by minimizing handling and attach the hair bundle at the 3/4 position of the hook shank. The length of the parachute post should be about the same length as the hook shank. |
4. Clip off the tag ends of the hair behind the securing wraps. |
5. Attach a second bundle of calf hair, this being the white, in the same manner as the black. Secure the second bundle directly above the first and clip off the tag end behind the securing wraps of thread.
6. Apply thread wraps from the shuck tie-in position to the wingpost for a smooth body foundation. Apply additional thread wraps at the base of the wingpost to bring the hairs upright. |
7. Wrap the thread around the base of the wingpost to give the parachute hackle a good foundation for securing the hackle to the post. Bring the thread to the shuck tie-in position and apply dubbing to the thread. |
8. Dub a tapered body behind the wingpost. Yeah, I see that errant black calf hair...we'll deal with that later. |
9. Select a sized dun hackle. This is a size 18. Remove the fibers from the base of the hackle and secure the clean quill to the side of the hook shank just in front of the post. with some tight wraps. Then wrap the quill up around the base of the wing post. |
10. Add some more dubbing to the thread. |
11. Apply the dubbing around the base of the wing post and just in front of the wing post behind the eye. This completes the dubbed body.
12. Wrap the parachute hackle 4-5 times and secure behind the eye with 3 tight thread wraps. |
13. Keeping thread tension, apply three more half hitches to just behind the eye of the hook. |
14. Clip off the tag end of the hackle and remove the errant black hair with your tweezers.
15. Apply a Whip Finish behind the eye and apply a drop of head cement. The finished Bivisible Dun. |
