Tying Instructions
1.Attach the hook to the vise and lay a thread foundation from behind the eye to the bend of the hook.
2. Separate the yarn strand to have enough strands to suit. Attach the strand to the bend of the hook and adjust the length of the strand (shuck) so that it is about 1 1/2 x’s the length of the shank.
3. Secure the tag end of the strand to the top of the hook shank just past the midpoint of the shank with thread wraps.
4. Wrap the thread back to the bend of the hook and attach the midge tubing. Build a thread abdomen with the thread up to just past the midpoint of the hook shank.
5. Wrap the clear midge tubing with touching wraps up to just past the midpoint of the hook shank and secure the tag end with some tight thread wraps.
6. Wrap the thread in front of the tubing securing some of the Antron strand, then fold back the strand and apply some additonal wraps of thread on the same area to lock the strand in place.
7. Trim off the Anrton strand so that it ends near the bend of the hook.
8. This should be the length of the Antron underwing.
9. Select two CDC hackles and match their tips together. The CDC underwing should be the same length as the Antron underwing.
10. Attach the CDC just in front of the abdomen and adjust the length of the CDC.
11. Trim off the tag end of the CDC and secure with some tight thread wraps. You should have the front 1/3 of the hook shank available for additional material.
12. Clip a section of Caribou and trim off the tips leaving a clump of hair for spinning. Place the clump on top of the hook shank in front of the wing and with a couple of thread wraps, tighten the wraps so the the hair spins around the shank. Add a few more thread wraps to secure.
13. This is how the spun thorax should look.
14. Use a Hair Packer to push the hairs up against the base of the wing.
15. Next, trim the hair fairly close to the hook shank. The bottom hairs should be trimmed flat along the bottom of the hook shank.
16. Add a few more wraps through the hair thorax to firmly anchor the material, then bring your thread just in front of the thorax.
17. Clip a section of deer hair, clean out the underfur and put the section of hair into a hair stacker.
18. Tamp the stacker vigorously to even the hair tips. There may be some broken tips in the section. You need to remove these hairs with a forcep.
19. Attach the deer hair wing to the top of the hook shank just in front of the thorax. The length of the wing should be just beyond the bend of the hook.
20. Apply a couple of loose wraps, then tighten and add a couple more. The tags ends will splay in front the hook eye.
21. Trim off the tag ends with an angled cut in line with the wing profile.
22. Apply a couple more thread wraps in front of the wing.
23. Whip Finish.
24. The finished Yuba Emerger.

Hogan Brown
Hogan’s Yuba Emerger
Hogan Brown is a fly fishing guide in Northern California with a number of fly patterns being marketed nationally. His home waters are the Yuba River where he designed both the Yuba Pupa and the Yuba Emerger. The Yuba Emerger became commercially available in 2015. This is Hogan’s emerger caddis pattern for the Lower Yuba and any tailwater weary trout feeding on emerging or crippled caddis.
Emerger components
When fish get wise to the X Caddis or E/C caddis this is where the Hogan’s Yuba Emerger pattern shines. Grease the wing and let the rest of the fly ride low as an emerger or cripple in the film. He recommends using it as a caddis emerger/cripple/adult during caddis hatches. Hogan also prefers applying floatant to the wing and drop a Yuba Pupa or a Last Call Caddis with no floatant about 12″ to 18″ off the back. The pattern consists of an Antron Shuck and a CDC underwing. The body is the thread with a clear midge tubing wrapped over it to give the segmented appearance. Some tiers will use various synthetics under this thread body to provide additional attraction below the CDC underwing. Hogan just brought back the Antron shuck and trimmed off at the bend of the hook.
Caribou is used as for the thorax but is difficult to procure. This is a great material to provide some floatation to the upper portion of the hook, it also provides support for the wing to get that distinctive caddis shape. Deer hair is preferred for the wing since it is a harder hair that has less flare and less broken tips. If you cannot find caribou, use the bleached Deer Hair for the thorax.
