Thin Mint Bugger, Olive/Brown/Black
Tying Instructions
1. Slide a Silver bead onto the hook and apply 7-8 wraps of leadfree wire behind the bead to fill the cavity of the bead and provide additional weight.
2. Attach the thread behind the leadfree wire wraps and secure those wraps with the thread.
3. Apply some Super Glue to the leadfree wraps.
4. Wrap the thread back down the hook shank to the bend of the hook.
5. Clip a section of Olive Marabou fibers. Select Marabou that has a full webbiness to the tip of the fiber. Measure the fibers to be about 1-1/2 the length of the hook shank.
6. Place the Olive Marabou fibers at the bend of the hook so that the length is about 1-1/2 the shank length. Apply a couple of tight thread wraps keeping the material on the top of the hook shank and secure to behind the leadfree wire wraps. Trim off the excess.
7. Select a second section of Medium Brown Marabou The Thin Mint has three colors: Olive/Brown/Black. Place the Brown Marabou directly above the first section of Olive Marabou.
8. Firmly secure the Brown Marabou to the bend of the hook and secure the tag end of the material behind the leadwraps. Trim off the excess and secure.
Next, Select a third section of Black Marabou and place it directly above the Brown Marabou.
9. Firmly secure the Black Marabou to the bend of the hook and secure the tag end of the material behind the lead wraps.
10. Attach 4 strands of Pearl Flashabou on each side of the hook shank with the strands exceeding the tail.
11. Secure the strands along the hook shank to the tail tie-in position. Trim the strands so that they just exceed the tail length.
12. Now attach a single strand of Pearl Flashabou long the side of the hook shank, securing to the tail tie-in position. This will be one of the ribbings.
13. Attach a section of Copper Wire to the side of the hook shank and secure it down to the tail tie-in position.
14. For the body, secure about 3-4 strands of Peacock Herl by the tips to the tail tie-in position,
15. Wrap the herl forward with touching wraps to just behind the bead.
16. Secure the tag ends of the herl behind the bead with thread wraps.
17. Wrap the single strand of Pearl Flashabou with spirol wraps up to the bead/
18. Secure the tag end of the flashbou behind the bead and trim off the excess.
19. Select a saddle hackle in which the length of the hackle fibers just exceed the gape of the hook. Clean the fibers from the base of the hackle and secure the hackle behind the bead with the concave portion of the hackle facing the tail.
20. I like to bend the base of the quill and attach some more thread wraps to really secure the hackle to the hook shank.
21. Wrap the hackle behind the bead 3-4 times for a full collar hackle, then spirol wrap the hackle to the tail.
22. Once you reach the tail, take the copper wire ribbing to secure the tag end of the hackle.
23. Spirol wrap the copper wire forward in a counter-wrap to secure the hackle to the herl body. .
24. Wrap the copper wire a couple times behind the bead. Secure with thread wraps.
25. “Helicopter” the wire to remove the tag end behind the bead and Whip Finish.
26. Trim off the tag end of the hackle.
28. Finished Thin Mint.

Thin Mint
The Thin Mint is a variation of the Wooly Bugger utilizing a trifecta of tail colors, Black/Brown/Olive, and a Peacock Herl body. The multi colorations give the appearance of a sculpin or other baitfish and is excellent for stripping through deep pools and runs. The weighted front portion of the pattern provides a jigging movement.
The pattern can be tied onto a jig hook for a smaller profile and is very effective for smallmouth bass or under an indicator. Another excellent variation is the Copper Thin Mint where the tail colors are Ginger/Wine/Medium Brown with copper flashabou.
