Tying Instructions: Galloup’s Mini Dungeon
1. We start by constructing the rear hook of the articulated Mini Dungeon. Place the size 6 Daicchi 2461 or Gamakatsu B10S onto the vice. These are wide gap stinger hooks providing good hook penetration. Attach the GSP thread to the shank and wrap to the bend of the hook.
2. Kelly Galloup prefers two tone tails, so that’s what we will do. Select a blood marabou so that the fibers extend beyond the hook bend from the eye.
3.Moisten the marabou to control the fibers and measure from the hook eye to just beyond the bend of the hook.
4. Secure the bundle of marabou fibers at the bend of the hook.
5. Secure the tag end of the marabou with thread wraps up the shank to just behind the eye. Trim off the excess marabou tag.
6. Next select a grizzly marabou feather for the tail. Find one that is well barred and full. Pull off the fuzzy material from the base of the feather.
7. Moisten the Grizzly Marabou to control the fibers and lay the feather flat onto the tail tie down position, securing with a couple of tight wraps. The tips should be the same length as the first bundle of marabou.
8. Secure the tag end of the grizzly marabou along the top of the hook shank and trim off the remainder. Wrap the thread back to the bend of the hook.
9. Secure a piece of Gold wire along the side of the shank. Bend the tag end of the wire back along the shank towards the hook bend and secure with thread wraps. Stop your thread at the bend of the hook.
10. At the bend of the hook create a dubbing loop. The loop is held by a dubbing loop tool and the loop is brought together with a thread wrap around the loop nearest the shank. Once completed, wrap the thread up to the hook eye.
11. Within the loop, apply some ice dubbing with the tiniest amount nearest the shank. Note that you do not need to wax the loop since the dubbing loop tool will close the loop by it’s weight.
12. Spin the dubbing loop tool to secure the dubbing firmly within. Note the increase of material as the loop is further from the shank.
13. Holding the loop with a hackle plier, you can wrap the dubbing forward from the bend of the hook to the hook eye. This will provide a small tapered body. If using a rotary vice, remember to apply a half hitch to the thread to keep it from unwrapping from the shank.
14. Secure the tag end of the loop with a couple of tight thread wraps and trim off the tag end.
15. Next, select a webby saddle hackle. This is a wide gap hook so I am using a size 10 hackle on the size 6 B10S.
16. Preen the fibers down the hackle and fold the hackles with your thumb and index finge into a planar structure.
17. Attach the hackle to the shank just behind the eye with the fibers directed back towards the tail.
18. Palmer the hackle to the bend of the hook and lock the hackle with one wrap of the ribbing wire.
19. Palmer the ribbing wire forward the same number of turns as you did with the hackle and secure the wire with thread wraps behind the eye.
20. Now, select a Grizzly Marabou feather for a wing. You want one that is well barred and full with a good width.
21. Place the marabou feather flat on top of the hook shank behind the eye. The length of the feather should extend about one third into the tail section. Secure behind the eye with thread wraps.
22. Apply a Whip Finish and trim off the thread.

24. Place the larger size 4 B10S hook onto the vice and attach the thread behind the eye laying a thread foundation on the front half of the hook shank.
25. Place a dumbbell eye about one eye length behind the hook eye. You want to have enough room behind the hook eye to spin deer hair. Wrap 5 turns in one direction and five turns in the other direction across the axis of the dumbbell eye to attach to the hook shank.
26. Spin the dumbbell eye around the shank so that it sits beneath the hook shank.
27. Apply a few more cross wraps and tighten the wraps by bringing the thread beneath the hook shank but above the dumbbell eye. This will squeeze those cross wraps together and cinch the dumbbell eye to the hook shank.
28. Wrap the thread back to the bend of the hook.
29. Snip a 3 inch piece of Intruder Trailer Wire and crimp the middle of the piece to form a “V”. Slide the rear portion of the pattern that you just completed onto the wire.
30. Place the wire onto the top of the hook shank and set the length of the connection loop so that the rear fly moves freely but is close enough to not foul the hook. Secure the wire to the top of the shank wrapping forward to the eyes.
31.Secure the articulation wire right up against the dumbbell eye as close as you can get.
32. Now, wrap the two strands around each side of the eye tightening the wire with a clamp and securing with thread wraps.
33. Trim off the excess wire tags and secure with thread wraps back to the bend of the hook.
34. Select another Grizzly Marabou to cover the loop connection.
35. Place this feather flat so that it extends about one third into the rear fly and secure the feather with thread wraps at the bend of the hook.
36. Secure the ribbing wire to the hook shank from the bend of the hook to the dumbbell eye. I had moistened the connection feather so it doesn’t look to full for the photo. My bad!
37. Create a dubbing loop just like you did on the rear portion. Attach ice dubbing to the loop.
38. Twist the dubbing within the loop for a tapered effect.
39. Wrap the dubbing forward to the back of the dumbbell eyes.
40. Select another hackle.
41. Fold the hackle to get the fibers directed towards the rear.
42. Secure the hackle in front of the dumbbell eye.
43. Palmer the hackle back towards the bend of the hook and secure with one wrap of the ribbing wire.
44. Next, palmer the ribbing wire forward and secure with some thread wraps in front of the dumbbell eyes.
45. Select another Grizzly Marabou for the wing.
46. Lay the wing flat behind the dumbbell eyes with the wing extend about one third over the rear wing. Secure with thread wraps behind and in front of the eyes.
47. Bring the thread back behind the eyes.
48. Attach a single strand of legs behind the eyes. This is optional, the pattern works well without legs too. When attaching the legs just include one x wrap.
49. Snip a clump of deer hair from the hide. Clean out any underfur. You want straight, thin hair placing the hair within the hair stacker to even the tips.
50. Holding the hair by the tips, trim the hair to about a 1/4 inch length and place the clump just above the dumbbell eyes. Spin the thread to the right and apply a tight wrap to the clump. You should see a flaring of the hair. Now apply a second tighter wrap to lock the hairs in place. Use your thumb to mash the hairs back towards the wing.
51. Cut a second bundle of hair trimming the tips and the butts for a bundle that is about 3/8 inch long. Place two loose wraps around the bundle and tighten.
52. The hair will flare with tightening the thread.
53. Now, release the hair and bring the thread a third time around the bundle. The hair will rotate a full turn and come to a stop.
54. Secure the thread with a few half hitches over the hook eye and trim off the thread.
55. Let’s sculpt that head. Turn the pattern upside down. Using a razor blade, trim off the bottom hairs flat from the hook eye to the dumbbell eyes. Take care not to nick the legs.
56. Turning the fly pattern back upright. Bend the razor blade into a curve that touches both sides of the dumbbell eyes. Press the blade into the hairs.
57. Work the blade to trim off most of the hairs.
58. You should use a sharp pair of hair scissors to achieve the final appearance.

Galloup Mini Dungeon
Kelly Galloup created a smaller version of his Sex Dungeon pattern called the Mini Dungeon. The Mini version is better suited to our Sierran waters in that is about 2.5 inches in length and closer to the actual size of sculpins we have within our waters. The other benefit to the Mini is that it is so much easier to cast.
The articulated Mini Dungeon differs from many other sculpin patterns with the hook point riding down rather than up. The is due to the placement of the lead pupil eye secured under the shank near the hook eye. Kelly aims to swim this Mini within the water column rather than bouncing it along the bottom. Most of the mass of this pattern is above the hook shank. By placing the hook point below the shank provides a much better opportunity to hook up on the lower jaw of the fish for better hook sets.
The pattern is well mottled with the grizzly or barred marabou. Kelly likes the two-tone effect for the tail. It can be fished on the swing, you can jerk-strip it, jig, jerk-jig or even use it under a hopper dropper rig if your flotation is good enough.
