Tying Instructions
1.Debarb the hook and lay a thread base covering the shank from behind the eye to just above the barb of the hook. Cover the thread base with a layer of head cement. This thread base will help in keeping the body materials from slipping.
2. Select a sparse bunch of Polar White Polar Aire and tie it in to form a tail. The tail should extend about a hook gap from the bend of the hook. Top this tail with a sparse clump of Silver Angel hair, extending past the Poly Aire.
3. Tie in a sparse clump of Pearlescent Green Angel hair on the underside of the hook.
4. Continue tying forward adding sparse clumps of Silver Angel Hair to the top of the hook shank and Pearlescent Green Angel hair to the underside of the shank until you reach the forward third of the hook shank.
5. Tie in a sparse clump of Chartreuse Angle Hair on the top of the shank and a sparse clump of Pearlescent. Green Angel Hair on the bottom of the hook shank. At this point you should be nearing the eye of the hook.
6. Tie in a sparse clump of Olive Angel Hair on top of the hook shank and then follow it with a sparse clump of Gunmetal Grey Angel hair also tied on the top of the hook shank. Finally, tie in a very sparse clump of Pearlescent Green Angel Hair on the underside of the hook. Form a neat head and whip finish. Trim the Angel hair for the profiloe you desire. Apply molded epoxy eyes to either side of the head and coat with a thin layer of 5 minute epoxy.

Burk’s Hot Flash Minnow
Burk’s Hot Flash Minnow was developed by Andy Burk. Size and silhouette are the most important aspects to create a successful baitfish pattern. Take care to confirm the size of the natural baitfish you are fishing. Depending upon the type of baitfish you are trying to mimic, keep in mind the shape of the natural. A minnow will have a narrow and thin body but a sculpin would be short and stout.
Presentation
Movement and presentation are also major factors in imitating baitfish. Bottom-dwelling baitfish patterns need to be weighted whereas shad and minnows need to be lighter to be retrieved horizontally through the water column. Minnows will often use short, darting movements or long, fast dashes. Bottom-dwelling baitfish such as sculpins and darters prefer to hide using short erratic motions.
Color Combinations for Trout
Color can be a minor consideration and will be variable depending upon the water clarity, depth, and temperature. Andy has suggested the following combinations of color as being popular for trout:
- Light Brown/Gold Dark Brown/Bronze(golden shiner)
- Pearl Green/Silver Holographic/Baitfish
- Electric Yellow/Chartreuse Ice/Olive
- Pearl Green/Blue/Black
- Gold/Chartreuse/Olive
- Pearl Green/Bronze/Black
You can use larger hook sizes and utilize this pattern for salt water purposes. The pattern has been used on Tarpon in Costa Rica. Andy prefers to use Angel Hair. However, there have been a number of similar products available which would work as well such as Wing N Flash.
