Hot Creek Caddis
The Hot Creek Caddis was designed by Eric Otzinger while he worked at Bob Marriott’s Fly Shop in the mid-90’s. Many fly tiers considered Eric to be one of the finest tiers in the world. Unfortunately, Eric passed away in 2014. His Hot Creek Caddis pattern is tied with a gray dubbing to represent the small gray sedge that frequents Hot Creek. The pattern is tied to smaller hook sizes of #16-22 and he leaves off any trailing shuck. This makes the pattern a true dry fly, which is required to fish the Hot Creek Ranch private waters. The gray colored pattern has also been successful on other slow-moving waters such as the Lower Owens and the Henry’s Fork.
The pattern can be modified to imitate mayflies, too. Changing the colorations to a pale yellow body and a grizzly dun hackle is a good choice to imitate Pale Morning Duns. Blue Wing Olives would utilize a dark olive body and a dark dun hackle. Even small green drakes could be imitated with a dark olive body and a grizzly yellow hackle.
