Fulling Mill has it’s roots in fly tying going back to the 1930’s where Denis Whetham established a modest fly tying business in Kenya while recuperating from near paralysis in a rugby accident. He expanded his business in the 1960’s by adding 30 more tyers to his staff and sold flies to over 20 countries. Denis sold his business to an associate named Brook Bond in the late 1960’s. The company was named, Kenya Fishing Flies, and Denis became the marketing director. In the 1970’s , Denis helps a retired Colonel Andy Unwin set up another Fly Tying business within Kenya as the Kenya Fishing Flies was ceasing operations. The new company, Unwin & Sons, prospered in Kenya and Andy’s son, Barry, created a distribution company in the UK known as Fulling Mill. By 1995, Barry purchases his father’s operation and brings all production to the UK. In 2005, Fulling Mill establishes a US presence with a facility in New Hampshire. Orvis is their main customer. By 2013, Barry Unwin decides to retire and sells his business to Alister Jack, Scottish entreprenuer and fly fishing enthusiast. Alister expanded the operations and created a manufacturing base in Sri Lanka. Fulling Mill has been utilizing fly fishing hooks for almost a century and has a good grasp on what good hook should look like and fish.
