Galloup’s Woolly Sculpin
A woolly sculpin is a single-hook streamer fly pattern designed to imitate a sculpin, a small, bottom-dwelling fish that is a key food source for large trout and bass. Developed by fly tier Kelly Galloup, the pattern is known for its ability to mimic the darting and fleeing action of a real sculpin. Galloup’s design is a refinement of an earlier sculpin pattern by Ed Shenk. Galloup added a hackle for a fuller body and removed a marabou wing to create a slimmer profile.
A defining characteristic is the clipped deer hair head, which is spun and trimmed to create the wide, flat profile of a sculpin’s head and pectoral fins. This also helps the fly push water and gives it an erratic swimming action. The body typically uses chenille, while the tail is made of marabou for lifelike movement in the water. Popular colors are Tan, Olive, Black
Variations
Variations include Galloup’s Cactus Woolly Sculpin which uses cactus chenille for a different body texture and appearance. Another variation is the Conehead Woolly Sculpin which has a weighted cone to help it sink faster and produce a jigging motion.
- Sinking line: Use a sinking-tip or full-sinking fly line to help get the fly down to the appropriate depth.
- Casting: Cast quartering upstream and across the current.
- Retrieve: After letting the fly sink to the bottom, use short, aggressive strips to make the fly dart erratically. Allow for pauses, which will cause the fly to drift and sink again, imitating a wounded sculpin.
- Location: Focus on the stream bottom, especially around structure like large rocks and submerged logs where sculpins hide.
