Kreelex Minnow – a fantastic glow in the water

Tying Instructions
1. Attach the hook to the vise and secure the thread behind the eye.
2. Lay a thread foundation to the bend of the hook.
3. Wrap the thread back up to the 1/3 position and build a hump of thread. This will help support the dumbell eye placement.
4. Place the dumbell eye in front of the thread hump and secure with figure eight wraps.
5. Wrap the thread around the base of the dumbell eye a few times to tighten the figure eight wraps.
6. Apply a drop of super glue to secure the threads.
7. Measure a bundle of Kreelex Fish Flash from the eye to just beyond the bend of the hook for the tailing section.
8. Place the bundle of Kreelex on the top of the hook shank and at the center or 1/2 position. Secure with tight thread wraps to the bend of the hook. Maintain a hold on the strands until all of the tags ends have been secured.
9. Wrap back to the 1/2 position with touching thread wraps.
10. Measure another bundle of Kreelex Fish Flash fibers from the eye to just beyond the bend of the hook.
11. Holding the bundle of fibers near the eye, secure the end of this bundle just in front of the dumbell and behind the hook eye.
12. Wrap all of the fibers in front of the dumbell building an angled thread base.
13. Bring the thread under the dumbell and secure the Kreelex fibers to the top of the hook shank just behind the dumbell with tight wraps.
14. The body fibers should extend just beyond the bend of the hook.
15. Invert the hook and measure another bundle of darker Kreelex Fish Flash from the eye to just beyond the bend of the hook. I’m using the copper color. This will represent the back of the minnow.
16. Secure the ends of the fibers behind the hook eye and in front of the dumbell with tight wraps. Keep a firm hold on the strands until all of the fibers are secure to the hook shank.
17. Build up a thread head behind the hook eye that slants from the dumbell to the eye of the hook.
18. Apply a Whip Finish and trim off the thread.
19. Apply a color marker similar the color of the Kreelex to the thread head.
20. A drop of Sally’s Hard as Nails or Loon Thin Flow will secure the thread wraps behind the eye.
21. The finished Kreelex Minnow.

The Kreelex Minnow is a popular streamer pattern designed by the late Chuck Kraft. It is a simple tie yet very effective with the flashy two colors of Kreinik Flash. Kreinik Flash is a soft metallic material that glows underwater and is softer than flashabou. The material enables the streamer to move seamlessly through the water. MFC markets this material as Kreelex Fish Flash.
Chuck Kraft
Before the Kreelex got its name, Chuck was calling it the Rolex Minnow due to the fly’s flashy shine much like a Rolex watch. On a trip a client told Chuck that Rolex would be quick to sue over the choice of name so “Kreelex” was born after the original material used, Kreinik Flash.
The Kreelex is tied similar to the Clouser minnow. Chuck tied the pattern specifically for trout but the pattern has proven itself with Carp, Bass, and many other gamefish. The best colorations appear to be a blend of Copper/Gold, or Gold/Silver, and Black&Red/Silver.
