Tying Instructions
1. Slide a Black 7/64 Slotted Tungsten Bead onto a size 12 Hanak H450BL hook. Secure the hook to the vise.
2. With a Micro Rabbit Strip Grizzly, place the strip onto the point of the hook through the center of the strip hide. The length of the tail should be about 1.5 times the shank length.
3. Remove the hook and slide the strip up to the bend of the hook. Secure the hook to the vise and slide the strip back onto the vise jaws with the tail extending behind the bend of the hook.
4. Attach 150 denier GSP thread to the hook shank behind the bead and lay a thread foundation to the bend of the hook. Cut off the tag end of the thread.
5. Attach a 4 inch piece of Flat Pearlescent tinsel to the bend of the hook with thread wraps.
6. Wrap the tinsel down along the bend of the hook about a quarter of the bend. Build this section up with numerous layers of tinsel and secure it with thread wraps at the bend of the hook.
7. Remove the tag end of the tinsel and the thread should hang with the thread just behind the hook point.
8.Bring the other end of the strip under the tinsel wraps. The tinsel represents the belly of the sculpin once the pattern turns over with the hook point upwards. Take a bodkin to separate the rabbit fibers directly below the bend of the hook. The thread should hang just inside the hook point.
9. Apply a couple of tight thread wraps and pull upwards to center the strip to the bottom of the shank.
10. Wrap the thread back to the base of the bead. Now start to palmer the strip around the shank heading toward the bead. Preen the rabbit hair back towards the rear as your wrap the strip forward.
11. Continue palmer wrapping the strip with the hide facing the bead.
12. Wrap the strip up to behind the bead.
13. Secure the strip behind the bead with thread wraps.
14. Next, snip off the tag end of the strip just behind the bead.
15. Secure the end of the strip behind the bead with tight thread wraps.
16. Apply a whip finish behind the bead
17. Remove the GSP thread behind the bead and secure a Yellow 8/0 Danville thread behind the bead, wrapping a “hot spot”.
18. Whip Finish.
19. Snip off the tag end of the thread.
20. Brush the fibers back towards the rear of the hook.
21. Starting behind the bead, trim off the rabbit fur that is on top of the fly, exposing the hide strip and the section of tinsel. This will be the bottom of the pattern which should be flat and show the belly of the sculpin.
22. The hide should be clean of fur from the bead to the tinsel underbelly.
23.Trim both sides of the Sculpin head to sweep behind the bead
24. Also, trim the tail section with a slanted trim along the middle of the tail piece. This will represent the body taper.
25. Apply a coating of Loons Flow Resin from the tinsel belly to just behind the bead. This resin will also cover the final thread wraps.
26. Use a UV Torch to set the resin.
27. Brush the fibers back. This is the finished Micro Rabbit Sculpin inverted to show how the pattern moves within the water.

The Micro Rabbit Sculpin is straight forward and won’t give tyers any grief. It is a simple yet very effective sculpin pattern. Using a jig style hook allows you to bang this fly off the bottom without immediately damaging the sharpness. The simple, yet durable, composition is ideal for getting down deep and sacrificing a couple flies to be in the zone. The body and pectorals are both made from Micro Rabbit Strips. The underbelly is wrapped flash. Croston’s Micro Rabbit Sculpin is perfect for novice tyers looking to get into tying and translate it to productivity on the water asap.
Whether fished in a euro style nymph rig or under a bobber, this pattern will produce. If the word of an experienced competitive angler isn’t enough, the legend Joe Humphreys has also referred to sculpin as “strawberry short cake for trout.” Every angler should carry sculpin flies in their streamer box in several varying sizes and colors, and Croston’s Micro Rabbit Sculpin is the pattern to get started. The pattern will drop quickly and remain in the zone throughout the drift.
