Tying Instructions
1. Mash that barb with your vise and slide a bead up to the eye.
2. Attach 4-5 wraps of lead wire to fill the void of the bead.
3. Attach the thread and secure the lead wraps with the thread. Lay down a thread base to a position on the shank just above the mashed hook barb.
4. Select two brown biots and tie in at the bend of the hook with the biot tips facing down. The length of the tails should be about 3/4 the hook shank. I prefer to tie one at a time.
5. Attaching the second biot.
6. Attach a gold wire to the bottom of the shank and secure to the base of the tail.
7. Twist the dubbing onto the thread. It doesn’t take much. Secure the first fibers with one wrap at the base of the tail and twist the dubbing as a rope onto the thread.
8. Dub a tapered body almost to the bead leaving a small space for anchoring the wings and legs.
9. Wrap the ribbing forward about 4-5 wraps and secure just behind the bead.
10. Prepare a hen hackle by removing the basal fibers and exposing the quill. Now, remove the fibers from one side of the quill that is in the direction you wish to wrap. Yes…the far side.
11. Attach the hackle by it’s base just behind the bead and secure with some thread wraps.
12. Using your hackle pliers bring the hackle around the base of the body twice and secure with some thread wraps.
13. Trim off the tag end of the hackle and secure with thread wraps.
14. Place two amber Goose Biots in a V configuration with the points downward on top of the hook shank behind the bead. Secure with a couple of thread wraps.
15. Lift up the tag ends of the biots and place two tight wraps in front of the tag ends and behind the bead. The will help to “sandwich” the biots to the shank. They are slippery.
16. Apply some Zap a Gap to the thread. This will help to secure the biots.
17. Wrap the treated thread a few times behind the bead.
18. Finally, apply a black dubbing to the thread for a collar.
19. Wrap a collar and whip finish behind the bead.
20. The finished Hart’s Dark Lord.

Hart’s Dark Lord
Ron Hart
This nymph, a variation of the Prince Nymph, was created by Mt. Shasta guide, Ron Hart in 1986. It became quite popular within the Northern Sierra during the mid 1990’s and the popularity of this nymph seems to be growing as yet.
Darker, Natural colors
The Dark Lord tries to imitate the natural nymphs by utilizing darker colors yet still retains the contrast of the wings to the body – the same character that makes the Prince Nymph quite effective as an attractor nymph. The wings are a Ginger color which imitates the naturals and contrasts well against the black body.
Legs and Segments
The gold wire ribbing offers a segmented appearance. The Black Hen Hackle fibers are tied in small bundles downward on each side of the thorax to give the appearance of legs. Ron Hart’s original pattern uses stiffer neck hackle fibers extending to the base of the tail for the legs. Some variations on this pattern will apply the legs by wrapping a neck hackle twice, trimming off the upper fibers.
