Tying Instructions

1. Slide a small copper bead onto the hook to the eye. Attach the thread behind the bead and lay a foundation to the bend of the hook.

2. Select 3 Ringneck Pheasant Tail fibers. Attach the fibers to the top of the hook shank with the length of the tail equal to the shank length.

3. Splay the tail fibers by lifting the fibers up with your left thumb and applying thread tension at the base of the fibers.

4. Next, attach a colored Ultra Wire for ribbing along the side of the shank. Start the wire from within the bead cavity and secure down to the base of the tail.

5. Wrap the ribbing forward with about 4 evenly spaced wraps to the mid shank.

6. Secure a goose biot just behind the bead. The biot should have the concave side facing upwards. Clip some of the biot tip off first since the biot will need to be broad as a wingcase. Secure the biot with thread wraps to the midpoint of the shank.

7. Dub a thorax using Antron Sparkle dubbing. The thorax should be about twice the diameter as the abdomen. Wrap the dubbing up to the bead.

8. Attach a couple strands of Krystalflash just behind the bead with figure eight wraps so that the strands will secure along the sides of the shank. Trim the strands so that they do not exceed the rear of the abdomen.

9. Bring the biot over the thorax and secure with some thread wraps. Whip Finish. Trim off the tag end of the biot over the bead.

Hogan’s S&M Nymph

Hogan’s S&M nymph is designed by fly fishing guide Hogan Brown of Chico, CA . Hogan is a signature fly tier for Rio Products and has designed a number of flies that are marketed throughout Sierran fly shops. Since Hogan guides on the Yuba and Feather Rivers, many of his patterns have been tested within these waters.

The S&M Nymph is a Baetis pattern that has a distinct advantage of quickly sinking into the feeding depths for nymphing. It is weighted by use of a copper bead head but has additional sinking capabilities through the use of a thread body, streamline shape, and Ultra wire for the distinct segmentation.

Hogan uses a Goose Biot for the wingcase which provides a distinct color contrast to the thorax which is typical with natural baetis nymphs having a darker hue on the top of the thorax. Krystal Flash is used for the legs which provides attraction and movement to the fly yet does not detract from it’s sinkability. The fly is often used as a dropper within freestone or tailwater situations where you need to get the nymph down quickly.

Hogan was greatly influenced by Mike Mercer (CB Micro Mayfly) and you will see that this pattern has many of the attributes of Mercer’s Micro Mayfly but handled differently by the materials chosen.
