Tying Instructions

1. Attach the thread to the hook shank near the middle and wrap a thread foundation to the bend of the hook.

2. With mayfly imitations, Roy often used some tailing materials. Here I am using about 6-7 Partridge fibers that are about the length of the shank and tying the fibers to the top of the shank to just behind the eye. Notice how the fibers splay around the shank in a fan shape.

3. Trim off the tag end of the tailing fibers and wrap the thread back to the mid point of the shank. Select a goose biot and attach the tip to the top of the shank with the notch facing away from you. Securing the biot tip along the shank up to the tail tie-in position. With the last wrap make sure that the biot is perpendicular to the shank with the notch facing away.

4. Hold the end of the biot with hackle pliers and wrap the biot forward with touching wraps up to the 1/4 position on the hook shank. Secure with some thread wraps.

5. Trim off the tag end of the biot and wrap the thread back to the 1/3 postion of the shank. Apply dubbing to the thread. Using Superfine dubbing, you will not need thread wax. Twist a small portion to the thread.

6. Take one turn of the dubbed thread over the shank to lock in the fibers and twist the material some more to achieve a tight noodle of material. Wrap a small thorax at the 1/3 position leaving some space behind the eye.

7. Select a Partridge Feather with fibers that will just be long enough to extend beyond the bend of the hook. Preen the fibers back to create an open space at the tip for a tie-in location. Attach the tip just behind the eye along the side of the shank.

8. Using your hackle pliers, wrap the feather around the base of the thorax witht the fibers sweeping back. 3-4 turns is enough.

9. Bring the base of the feather against the back side of the shank and secure with a couple of thread wraps, taking care not to trap any fibers.

10. Trim off the base of the feather and apply thread wraps at the base of the collar to secure this tag.

11. Apply a whip finish.

Roy Palm

RP Emerger

If you ever fished the Frying Pan river near Aspen, Colorado, you probably had met Roy Palm, the owner of the Frying Pan Anglers fly shop. Roy had a large number of friends over the years that fished the Frying Pan with him such as A.K. Best, Ed Engle, and John Gierich. He was a signature fly tier for Umpqua and created a series of biot emergers utilizing a soft hackle from a hen neck. Unfortunately, Roy passed away in 2019 and he will be missed.

Winter Tailwaters

Roy’s fly patterns have been popular within many winter tailwaters for midge hatches and small mayflies over the past twenty years. He noticed that most of the midges emerge in the film and that, during the winter, the midge hatches were often the only food source happening near the surface. If you enjoy dry fly fishing, this would be your selection. The hook needed to be a light wire with a straight shank so that it laid parallel to the surface of the stream. It’s not easy to see, so Roy often used an indicator to locate the fly.

The soft hackle represented the emerging midge. Originally, the pattern was tied without a tail or shuck, but later patterns often had this feature. With tailing material and a wet fly hook, the pattern can be adapted for emerging mayflies, like BWO’s. This is a popular fly during the winter months on the Upper and Lower Owens River, here in the Sierra.

Roy’s Special Emerger is designed to be fished deep, on the swing, or dead-drifted in the film. It has a superfine dubbing body and a Fluro Fiber wing. Often tied in Gray or Black for the Trico hatch.
