Sparkle Flag
The Sparkle Flag Dun is a variation designed by the late Bob Quigley. It is a combination of two earlier designs of his: the Hackle Stacker Flag Dun and the Sparkle Stacker. The “hackle stacker” portion of this design is the paraloop method of wrapping hackles around a looped monofilament and bringing the monofilament over a dubbed thorax to a tie-off location just behind the eye. The result is a group of hackles residing upon the top of the thorax keeping the hackles well above the hook shank. This allows the fly to submerge itself well into the surface film and results in better hook-ups due to the hook placement being lower in the water. The “flag dun” portion of the design is the use of Z-Lon for both the shuck and wing. The flag allows the pattern to be easily seen in the water film.
Bob also took the design elements of his Sparkle Stacker by using thread or floss as the body material, particularly useful when tying small sizes.
