Butt Monkey

The Butt Monkey is a renowned streamer fly pattern that was designed by Scott Smith of Thunderbay, Ontario for giant brook trout. Kelly Galloup and Bob Linsenman popularized the pattern in their book, “Modern Streamers for Trophy Trout” in 1999. Kelly adapted the pattern to have lead eyes for jigging and, later, made it into an articulated pattern to provide a lifelike, erratic swimming pattern. According to Kelly Galloup, he has caught more trophy trout with this pattern than any other except for his Zoo Cougar.

The Butt Monkey was instrumental in the design of many of Kelly’s sculpin patterns due to the large, bulky head that pushes a significant amount of water. This pattern relies on a  wool head to absorb water and create a broad profile. Later, Kelly would create a similar profile head using spun deer hair. The tail and wing are magnum rabbit strips and marabou that provide the movement mimicking a wounded baitfish. These features can be seen in Galloup’s Woolly Sculpin and the Kiwi Sculpin pattern. The body is often a cactus chenille to provide sparkle attraction.

The hook was originally a 3X long streamer hook like the Daiichi 2461 or TMC 5263 but contemporary patterns are using wide gap stinger hook like the Gamakatsu B10S.
