Down and Dirty Sculpin
The Down and Dirty Sculpin was designed by Gary Borger around 2009. “Down and Dirty” is a term used to describe flies meant to be pulled under water. It’s a technique even used with dry flies when Ed Engle used this term in the Summer 2003 issue of Fly Fishing and Fly Tying Journal, describing this technique with Stimulators and Elk Hair Caddis. It’s meant to get the fly past the surface film and present within the water column just below the surface.
Gary Borger designed a series of fly patterns in 2010 known as “Down and Dirty” but his term had a different meaning. Gary applied this term to fly patterns that he could turn out quickly and not sacrifice any fish catching qualities. He often uses a loop construction that he developed in the mid 1970’s. The Down and Dirty Sculpin is one of these patterns yet it can be applied in the same manner that Ed Engle described.
