Taking the Red Lake Trail behind Fish Springs off Hwy 395. The trail proceeds to Red Lake (11.64 acres) at 10,457' elevation, which contains Goldens. The creek, Red Mountain Creek, and the two small ponds below Red Lake also contain Goldens. Infrequently traveled, Red Lake Trail is steep, rugged and un-maintained. At times it is difficult to locate. Be prepared to navigate with the aid of a topographic map. A pre-dawn start is recommended during the summer. The alpine lake at the end of the trail and Split Mountain are popular with mountaineers. The trailhead is accessed by rocky dirt roads, 4WD and high-clearance vehicles are recommended.
